We began the season of Lent with different decorations and symbols in the sanctuary. We have a green plant instead of a flower, symbolizing our waiting for new life in Christ at Easter. Also, we have six candles for each Sunday of Lent. Each Sunday, a candle is extinguished, to symbolize Jesus’ journey to the cross.
As the candle is extinguished, we read some verses from the last week of Jesus’ life. This week: ‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!’ (Matthew 23:37)
