Many Presbyterian churches follow a tradition of decorating the sanctuary with color to represent certain times of year.
For this Sunday, we are decorated in red. Red symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the disciples at Pentecost (Acts 2:3-4), as well as other times when fire represented God’s presence (the burning bush in Exodus 3:2, the pillar of fire leading the Israelites to freedom in Exodus 13:21.)
Why red this week? We are ordaining people to the office of elder, and installing some already ordained to a new term of office. Elders govern and guide the church, as they are governed and guided by God.
In our ordination and installation service we pray for the Holy Spirit to rest on the elders as they lead the church.
Pray for all your church leaders as we begin 2017.
