Beliefs

Presbyterians believe in a theology that began taking shape during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. We believe in:

  • The sovereignty of God. God is the supreme authority throughout the universe.
  • Scripture as God’s Word to us. Our knowledge of God and God’s purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ. Individual Presbyterians hold varying interpretations of specific Scriptures, but we still believe that Christ is present when the Word is read and proclaimed.
  • Redemption by grace through faith. Our redemption through Jesus is God’s generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments.
  • The priesthood of all believers. It is the job of everyone – ministers, lay people, men and women alike – to love one another and to share this Good News with the world.
